Message from Mark Montgomery

It is surreal that in 2020, we still hear about the senseless killing of African American citizens. Most recently, the people responsible for protecting and serving the public needlessly killed George Floyd and added his name to an ever-growing list of deaths, which include Eric Garner, Michael Brown, Botham Jean, Dreasjon “Sean” Reed, Breonna Taylor, and countless others.

What those officers did to George was horrific and unacceptable. As a society, we cannot turn a blind eye to this type of behavior. Like many of you, I saw the graphic video that captured our nation’s attention. It was horrifying and disgusting; I was angry. I was overcome with grief as I witnessed a human treated in such a despicable way, without regard for safety or someone’s humanity.

Bridgewater Consulting Group, without reservation, condemns the actions taken against George Floyd. We all know men and women in law enforcement of high character, who put their lives on the line for all of us. We respect and appreciate their commitment to their duties. We don’t paint them all with the same brush. Yet, we must condemn the actions of the officers who ignored their charge as public servants. We cannot let a few bad actors erase the good that the vast majority of people do each day to make a positive difference in our society and to help others.

As we have watched peaceful protests grow from coast to coast, we find ourselves standing at a critical moment in time. A moment when the institutional and systemic racism in our country still exists. A moment when people are raising their voices to declare that Black Lives Matter and that enough is enough! Bridgewater Consulting Group adds our voice and stands in solidarity for change to the voices of everyone from all races and ethnicities who want the same thing.

It is time for actions that will deliver lasting, positive changes. I founded and built this firm on the principles of diversity and inclusion. We all benefit from bringing unique and beneficial perspectives to the table. Throughout the past six years, the Bridgewater Consulting Group family has lived these qualities. We will always stand on the side of equality for all with zero exceptions.

I’ve asked our Leadership team to encourage an open dialogue with our employees and business partners. These are critical conversations. Let us ask the question, “What can I do to make a positive difference?” I have encouraged each member of my Leadership team to get involved at the local level.

We want all of our employees to know that we deeply care about how you are doing during this time. If you need assistance to process what is occurring, please leverage our Employee Assistance Program.

I want to close with this: one of the shining lights, at this moment in time, is the unity of all races and ethnicities in condemning this action, coming together, from coast to coast, as one voice. That encourages us to remain hopeful that this moment will be a catalyst for lasting change.
